depending on the country. In France church services is being conducted in memory of
all the saints and are held on November 1 but traditionally by the evening the
observance or ritual is for the dead. Similarly in the Philippines where you can have
free flower delivery, cemeteries everywhere are crowded with people who come to clean
and decorate family graves. All Saints Day is celebrated closely with All Souls
Day, which in turn is held on November 2.
Again All Saints Day is a celebration of not only Christian saints but a celebration
of family members, relatives, gift giving such as flowers and flower arrangements.
The celebration is particularly for those Catholic saints who have no special feast
days of their own, in many Roman Catholic, Anglican and Protestant churches.
In many western churches it is annually held November 1, just like the Philippines,
and in many eastern churches it is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. It
is also known as All Hallows Tide, All-Hallowmas, or All Hallows Day. On many
reference books Halloween is celebrated before all on the eve of all saints day.
Halloween or Hallowe’en is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on
31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows Day
All Saints’ Day is a Special non-working holiday. This means that the no-work, no-pay
policy is applied, the declaration of November 1 and 2 as special (non-working)
holiday is to allow Filipinos to remember and honor their dearly departed family
members and love ones. The Department of Labor and Employment reminded employers to
follow the strict regulations of the Philippine government in observance of the
November 1 and November 2 Special Non-Working Holidays.
By virtue of the implementing guidelines for Proclamation No. 459, s. 2012, declaring
the regular holidays, special (non-working) days, and special holiday for the 2013.
DOLE based the pay rules from the declaration of Holidays.

Historically, the idea or observance for All Saints Day goes back to the fourth
century when the Greek Christians kept a festival on the first Sunday after Pentecost
(in late May or early June) in honor of all martyrs and saints. Other sources say
that a commemoration of “All Martyrs” began to be celebrated as early as 270 CE but
no specific month or date is recorded. Pope Gregory IV made All Saints Day an
authorized holiday in 835 CE. It is speculated that the chosen date for the event,
November 1, may have been an attempt to supplant the pagan Festival of the Dead (also
known as Samhain or the feast of Saman, lord of death). All Saints Day is not to be
confused with All Souls’ Day, which was first instituted at the monastery in Cluny in
993 CE and quickly spread among Christians.
Unlike the Philippines, It is not a nationwide public holiday in countries such as
Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States of America. However, many
Christians celebrate All Saints’ Day in these and other countries. Of course there
are a lot of Filipinos in the countries above so if you ever what to share the
observance of all saints day wherever you are, just type in your browser the best
